During my recent move, I was getting my shed in order and unpacking some old boxes when I came across this:
A seriously munched piston out of the first car I actually paid for with my own money. An '84 Bronco II. That thing was a piece of shit, but it DID last 2.5 years without an oil change before this happened :)
Lesson learned on the oil thing. I was young, stupid and grew up in a household where cars were viewed strictly as appliances. Nobody bothered to tell me what would happen if I didn't keep up with maintenance. I did pay for a rebuilt engine and drove it another year or so before selling it to a co-worker, which is another story in itself.
I'm going to keep it on my desk here at work as a conversation piece.

but it DID last 2.5 years without an oil change before this happened
I'm sure these two things are completely unrelated.

Yep, though to was slightly larger after the .40 over rebuild. Still a piece of shit.

I have the 2.9 in my Ranger, and it is an OK engine. Was the 2.8 that much worse?

3100 pounds, 115hp at the crank, early 80s smog crap, 4wd drivetrain, yeah, it was pretty terrible. The 85 mph spedo was Ford being optimistic :)
